Jayanagar, Bangalore

Jayanagar is a residential and commercial neighbourhood of the city of Bangalore in Karnataka, India. It is sub-divided into ten blocks, most of which are residential areas. A prominent shopping complex is located in Jayanagar IV Block. Jayanagar IV Block also houses one of Bangalore's principal bus terminal.
The foundation of Jayanagar was laid in the year 1948. It was one of the largest planned neighbourhoods in Asia. Since then, Jayanagar has expanded significantly. Jayanagar is home to the cream of Bangalore's elite.
It is surrounded by Basavangudi, JP Nagar, Banashankari 2nd stage, Gurappanapalya, Sadduguntepalya and BTM Layout among other areas. It is also in proximity to the Lalbagh Botanical Garden. Jayanagar comprises ten area blocks (including 4th 'T' Block), of which the 3rd and 4th block are largely commercial hubs, while the rest are mostly residential.
A 2010 survey by DNA Bangalore ranked Jayanagar as the most liveable place in Bangalore.
==History==
In Kannada, Jayanagar literally means "Victory City". It is not conclusively known, however, why it is called so. One school of thought is that the name symbolizes the Maharaja of Mysore's first name "Jayachamaraja". The foundation of Jayanagar was laid in 1948. It was one of the first planned neighbourhoods in Bangalore and at the time, the largest in Asia. Jayanagar constituency has 7 wards and had 1.7 lakh voters .〔
Jayanagar was traditionally regarded as the southern end of Bangalore. The "South End Circle", wherein six roads from different areas meet, and the historic Ashoka Pillar (which was to mark the southern end of the city) bear this fact. While newer extensions have taken away this distinction from Jayanagar, it still remains one of the more southern parts of the city.
